With the right pruning, cedar trees can remain shrubs. When cedar shrubs are close together, they grow into a hedge that provides privacy, marks property boundaries and improves the appearance of the landscape. Although cedar is an evergreen and a relatively hardy specimen, it does require annual fertilizing to keep the foliage dark green and healthy. However, use caution since over-fertilizing will kill the tree or turn the foliage yellow.
Things You'll Need
30-10-10 granular fertilizer
Garden hose
High nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer
Blood meal (optional)
Bone meal (optional)
Wait until mid-spring, around the time that flowers and other trees start to bloom. Spread a 30-10-10 granular fertilizer onto the soil using the amount specified for the square footage of the cedar hedge.
Water the soil well with a garden hose immediately following the fertilizer application until you no longer see any granules on the surface of the ground.
Reapply the same amount of fertilizer to the cedar hedge in June and in July. Be sure to water well after each application.
Wait until fall, and then apply to the soil around the cedar hedge a slow-release fertilizer containing high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus. This fertilizer helps sustain the cedar hedge throughout the winter months.
