John Deere lawn mowers have two different types of deck height adjustments, the first type allows the operator to make the adjustment in one step, while the other type requires setting the deck in the raised position to adjust the height. In both of these height adjustments you can cut as low as a one-inch, and up to a four-inch cut. This procedure takes two minutes to complete.
Things You'll Need
13 mm wrench
Manual height adjustment
Park the lawn mower on a level surface and place the transmission in the neutral position.
Locate the mower deck lift handle on the left side of the fender deck. Pull the handle inward and slide the handle into the slot of the desired cutting height.
Slide the small yellow tab to the desired cutting height to remind you for the next time you mow. If the mower deck gauge wheels touch the ground, adjust up until the gauge wheels are no longer touching. Remove the 13 mm bolt in the middle of the gauge wheel, slide the wheel up, reinstall the 13 mm bolt, and tighten down. Repeat this step on the other three gauge wheels.
Mechanical mower adjustment.
Park the lawn mower on level ground and raise the mower deck by pressing down on the foot pedal on the left side of the fender deck. Pull up on the mower lift lock lever on the left side of the dash.
Turn the mower cutting height knob in the middle of the fender deck, below the operator seat, to the desired cutting height.
Press down on the left side foot pedal and push down on the mower lift lock lever. Release the pedal to lower the mower deck. If the mower deck gauge wheels touch the ground, adjust them until the gauge wheel are no longer touching. Remove the 13 mm bolt in the middle of the gauge wheel, slide the wheel up, reinstall the 13 mm bolt, and tighten down. Repeat this step on the other three gauge wheels.
