How to Remove a John Deere Fuel Pump. The fuel pumps on John Deere lawn tractors are mechanical, making them longer lasting than electric fuel pumps. The pump bolts to the engine block; as the engine turns over, a rod presses into a diaphragm inside the pump, causing suction. The diaphragm inside the fuel pump is very delicate and can tear easily....
The fuel pumps on John Deere lawn tractors are mechanical, making them longer lasting than electric fuel pumps. The pump bolts to the engine block; as the engine turns over, a rod presses into a diaphragm inside the pump, causing suction. The diaphragm inside the fuel pump is very delicate and can tear easily. If this happens, the machine will no longer start, and the fuel pump must be removed. This procedure will take 10 minutes to complete.
Things You'll Need
Needle nose pliers
3/8-inch socket
Park the lawnmower on a level surface and set the parking brake. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.
Open the hood of the tractor and locate the fuel pump on the left side of the engine, below the engine shroud. Turn the fuel valve to the "OFF" position. Slide the clamps on the fuel lines back, on each end of the fuel pump, with the needle nose pliers. Slide the fuel line off each end of the fuel pump.
Remove the two 3/8-inch bolts holding the fuel pump to the engine block, slide the fuel pump off.
