The spindle on the MTD mower is used with the mower blade. When the mower is turned on, the blade spins around the spindle, allowing it to cut the grass below the blade. If your blade isn't spinning properly, you will need to replace the spindle. You don't have to be an MTD technician to get your mower spindle replaced. You can do it yourself with just a few tools and a little working knowledge of the mower.
Things You'll Need
Leather gloves
Wrench
Park your MTD on a flat surface and then engage the parking brake. Use the handle on the left side of the mower to raise the mower deck to the highest point available.
Put on a pair of leather gloves so you don't cut yourself while working with the blade. Reach inside the mower deck and use a wrench to remove the bolt holding the blade in place on the spindle.
Remove the blade and the blade adapter assembly from the spindle once the bolt has been removed. Remove the bolts holding the spindle to the top of the mower deck with your wrench.
Remove the spindle from the mower deck and then reattach the bolts to secure your new spindle to the deck. Replace the blade, the blade assembly and the center bolt to secure everything in place. Lower the mower deck to complete the installation.
