Grasshoppers are difficult pests to remove from your garden, as they are extremely mobile and are therefore hard to kill. As nocturnal creatures, grasshoppers feed on the leaves of your plants for sustenance during the summer until the season's first frost. Diatomaceous earth is an effective treatment that kills grasshoppers and any insect that comes in contact with the powder, as it clings to the body of the insect and rapidly absorbs moisture from the insect until the insect dies of dehydration, according to Earth Easy. While natural, diatomaceous earth is a non-selective poison that will eliminate both predatory and beneficial insects when applied to your garden.
Things You'll Need
Canola oil
Spray bottle
Diatomaceous earth
Tiller
Add 1 to 2 tbsp. of canola oil to a spray bottle. Pour 1 quart of water into the bottle to dilute the solution.
Mist the leaves with the solution during the early morning to late afternoon to repel the grasshoppers from eating the leaves.
Scoop up 1 cup of diatomaceous earth, and sprinkle it onto the leaves and around your garden.
Re-apply the spraying solution and the diatomaceous earth powder after rainfall to maintain protection of your plants.
Till the soil in your garden. Tilling the soil leaves the grasshopper eggs vulnerable to harsh temperatures, which kills the eggs. Alternately, tilling also buries the eggs deep into the soil, which prevents the nymph (baby grasshopper) from escaping the soil after hatching, according to Elizabeth and Crow Miller, authors of "Pests."
