Mower handle repair specifically involves the handle used to control the movement and direction of walk-behind mowers. The mower handle typically consists of two separate parts that are connected. The connection point at which the handles attach to the mowing deck, as well as the point of connection between the two handle sections, may require repair periodically as the result of normal operation.
Things You'll Need
Blade screwdriver
Adjustable wrench
Box end wrench
Replacement nut
Replacement bolt
Replacement washer
Tighten the screw or bolt and nut on both sides of the handle. Hold the nut in place with an adjustable wrench or box end wrench. Turn the screw or bolt with a screwdriver, adjustable wrench or box end wrench as needed to tighten the handle.
Replace missing or worn screws, bolts or nuts with suitable replacement parts as needed to make the repairs.
Examine the connection point where the handle is attached to the mowing deck. Determine whether parts such as the flange nut, bolt, washers or spacers are missing. Obtain suitable replacement parts.
Assemble the bolt, washer, spacer and nut together with the handle and mower deck so the handle is held in place securely. Refer to the manufacturer's assembly directions if necessary to determine the exact placement of the washer and spacer for assembly.
Attach throttle cables back to the handle of the walk-behind mower. Obtain replacement clips, if used, to replace worn or damaged clips. Remove old or damaged cable clips with a screwdriver and install a new clip in the same position. Make sure cables are not pinched and can move as necessary for operation.
Tighten the cord keeper holding the starter pull cord in place on the side of the mower handle. Hold the round eye of the keeper and tighten the retaining nut on the opposite side of the handle to tighten the keeper. Use an adjustable wrench to tighten the nut.
