Most small engines do not have hour meters. Adding an hour meter is beneficial for keeping track of a maintenance schedule. The meter can let you know when to check the air filter, change the spark plug, and, most importantly, when to change the oil. It can also let you know how much time you will need to complete certain tasks. Installing an hour meter kit requires some knowledge of engine theory. This procedure will take 15 minutes to complete.
Things You'll Need
Measuring tape
Scissors
Velcro tape
Hour meter kit
Crescent wrench
Set the engine on a hard, flat surface. Locate a suitable place to set the hour meter, away from heat, where it will be easy to see.
Measure the back of the hour meter and cut a piece of Velcro to that measurement. Place one half of the Velcro on the hour meter and the other half on the location you picked for it.
Remove a bolt on the engine that is close to the hour meter, using the crescent wrench. Place the ground coming from the hour meter through the removed bolt. Tighten the bolt back down.
Wrap the spark plug sensor wire coming from the hour meter around the spark plug wire located at the front of the engine. Turn the key to the "On" position. Check the hour meter to ensure you have installed it properly.
Tips & Warnings
Do not bolt the ground to a painted bolt as it will not ground properly and the hour meter will not work.
