Mechanical problems can cause your HRX 217 Lawn Mower to grind to a halt. There are many reasons why the machine fails to trim blades of grass, has a vibrating engine or even ceases to start completely. If you have basic knowledge of mechanical repair you can perform some simple troubleshooting steps for the engine and quite possibly prevent a costly repair bill.
Things You'll Need
Gasoline
Spark plug
Garden hose
Air filter
Replacement mower blades
Wrench
Work gloves
Check that the fuel valve is turned to the "On" position if the engine won't start. If the engine is cold move the throttle to the "Choke" or starting position. For a warm engine, shift the throttle to the "Fast" position.
Check the fuel tank for gas. Allow the engine to cool down before removing the fuel cap. Fill the tank with gasoline to just below the bottom of the fuel neck.
Remove and check the spark plug of the HRX 217 for any faults. Replace the spark plug if needed.
Recharge the battery to lengthen the reliability of the electric starter. Use a plug-in charger after prolonged periods of inactivity or if the starter is sluggish. Charge the battery in dry well-ventilated environment.
If your HRX 217 mower loses power, remove mud and thick grass clippings which can clog the underside of the machine's deck. Wash the deck with a garden hose and bag up grass clippings. Replace a dirty air filter which will restrict the air flow to the carburetor. Failure to do so could reduce the mower's engine performance. Wash the grass bag with the garden hose and allow to dry.
A vibrating engine could be caused by a loose mower blades. Tighten the blade using a wrench. Take care not to over tighten because this could stress the metal. If they are loose, they could fly out of the machine while it is being operated causing serious injury. Sharpen the blades or replace them with compatible ones. Use work gloves to protect your hands.
Move the throttle lever to the "Fast" position if the engine speed slows down. Shift the lever to "Slow" speed if the mower is cutting your lawn too fast.
