A gasoline-powered push mower is one of the most effective lawn maintenance tools in use today. It is more stable than a string trimmer and more maneuverable than a riding mower. Push mowers come in many different designs with various engines. Some engines on push mowers have a priming bulb that forces fuel into the carburetor. Other models do not have this feature and must be primed manually if the engine ever runs completely out of gas. You can prime your push mower by pouring gas directly into the carburetor.
Things You'll Need
Screwdriver
Funnel
Pantyhose
Scissors
Gas can of low-octane gasoline
Rubber gloves
Safety glasses
Dust mask
Use your screwdriver to remove the retaining screw from the top of the air filter cover. Pull the cover and the foam filter out of the top of the housing.
Cut the toe half off of one foot of the pair of pantyhose. Push the point of the toe into the wide end of your funnel. Wrap the remaining fabric around the outside of the wide end of the funnel leaving a depression inside to filter the gasoline.
Slide the small end of the funnel into the open housing on your lawn mower engine. Pour 1 tsp. of gasoline into the funnel. Let the fluid run through the section of pantyhose, through the funnel and into the engine.
Replace the foam filter and housing cover. Install the retaining screw and start your mower.
Tips & Warnings
You can also remove the spark plug, pour a teaspoon of gas into the receiver hole and replace the plug. Your engine should start and draw fuel from the tank and into the carburetor.
Rubber gloves, safety glasses and a dust mask are required when working with gasoline to keep you safe from exposure to the liquid and its vapors.
Due to the fumes associated with gasoline, you should only perform this procedure outdoors.
