The MTD Yard Machine garden tiller is a tool that allows people to till land in order to plant a garden or sod. If you are having problems with your MTD tiller, your first instinct could be to call a service technician to take a look at it, but you don't have to spend money on an MTD specialist to get your tiller working again. You can do it yourself with little knowledge of the tiller.
Things You'll Need
Wrench
New spark plug
Gas
Suction hose
Air filter
Turn the tiller off using the power button on the front of the unit.
Use a wrench to disconnect the spark plug from the tiller's motor. The spark plug is located under the spark plug cap on the front of the tiller. Clean the spark plug with a rag to remove any grime or dirt.
Place the spark plug back into the spark plug housing and try to start the tiller. If the tiller does not restart, replace the spark plug with a new one.
Check the fuel level in the gas tank on the side of the tiller. The fuel tank should be filled to the fill line on the exterior of the tank in order to keep the tiller running properly. Fill the fuel tank with gas if needed.
Replace the fuel inside the gas tank with new fuel if you have left the tiller outside during the winter. Use a suction hose to remove the gas and refill the tank. Old fuel could lead to condensation getting into the motor. This could cause the motor to misfire during use.
Remove the air filter from the tiller's combustion chamber on the front of the unit. Clean the air filter by hitting it up against your palm. Look the air filter over for any cracks or tears in the paper-like material. Replace the air filter if you find any cracks or tears.
