Knowing the number of bricks necessary for home construction will expedite your project and save you money. Bricks come in numerous sizes, but all bricks used for home construction must conform to specifications set forth by the American Society of Testing Materials. Bricks that pass must meet the minimum standards required for use in walls. Before you calculate how many bricks your house needs, visit the construction supply company from which you plan to buy your bricks. Make sure they carry the size of brick that you want to use before finalizing your calculations.

Measure the area of all walls that require bricks by multiplying the width and height of each wall in feet, then add all wall area measurements together.
Measure the area of all openings, such as doors and windows, and subtract those from the total wall area. The resulting number gives you the total square feet of space with which you need to fill with brick.
Confirm the measurements of the bricks you plan to use. Standard-sized bricks range in size from 2.25 to 3.625 inches in height by 7.625 to 11.625 inches in length.
Decide on the thickness of the mortar joints, the space between the bricks. Mortar adds from .125 to almost an inch between bricks, depending on the project. Increase the brick size by this thickness horizontally and vertically. Then, multiply the height of the brick with mortar by the length of the brick with mortar to get the total square inches the brick and mortar will take up. Convert this area in square inches to square feet by dividing it by 144.
Divide the total square feet of wall area for which you need brick by the total size of the brick and mortar combined. The resulting number indicates how many bricks you need to use on your house.
Tips & Warnings
Double check the actual dimensions of the brick you plan to use rather than relying on the brick name. Different manufacturers use different names for their bricks, so the sizes may differ, too.
If you plan to install a double brick wall, you'll need to double the amount of bricks you need for your project.
Choose bricks graded and rated for your area since freezing weather conditions can cause damage to bricks over a period of time.
