Things You'll Need
Work gloves
Wrench
Cutting stone
Stihl saw owner's manual
Put on work gloves to protect yourself from the sharp chain. Make sure the chain saw is turned off.
Take the three retaining bolts off by unscrewing them with the wrench counterclockwise. The retaining bolts are located where the bar of your chain saw attaches to the engine.
Pull the bar from the chain saw's engine. Remove the chain from the bar.
Choose the proper cutting stone and the right depth and angle settings for your particular Stihl chain saw. These details will vary depending on what model you have. Consult your Stihl owner's manual to determine the right settings.
Place your Stihl's chain saw blade on the Oregon's metal guide rails. Tighten the chain in the guide rails by using the hand knob at the bottom of your Oregon electric sharpener.
Lower the Oregon sharpener's arm and set the grinding stone flat against the first chisel tooth of your blade. Turn on the sharpener and sharpen the first tooth. It will look shiny and be sharp to the touch when you are done.
Loosen the rail guides and turn the blade over to sharpen the other side.
Repeat this process with each of the individual links.
Put the chain back on the chain saw and replace the bar.
Screw the bolts back into place clockwise to tighten the bar.
