The Craftsman GT5000 Lawn Tractor is designed to provide many years of service when properly maintained. The tractor features a mower deck that mounts under the tractor frame. To perform routine maintenance, or make repairs to the mower deck, you may need to remove it from the tractor. The mower deck is secured with multiple brackets and retaining arms, which must be disconnected before the deck can be removed. No special tools are required to remove the mower deck, although a screwdriver may make the job easier.

Removing the Mower Deck
Park the mower on the level surface and set the parking brake. Turn off the engine and put the gearshift in the "neutral" position. Remove the key from the ignition.
Move the attachment lever to the "disengaged" position. Lower the deck to the lowest level with the deck height lever.
Move the drive belt off the drive pulley with your fingers and the belt keeper bracket. Remove the retainer spring from the rear of the deck with a screwdriver. Push the housing guide off the bracket with your fingers.
Remove the spring from the idler arm with your fingers. Disconnect the front deck spring and washer with your fingers. Disconnect the mower suspension arms by pulling the pins out with your fingers.
Remove the rear retaining springs with your fingers. Slide the mower deck out the right side of the tractor.
Installing the Mower Deck
Park the mower on the level surface and set the parking brake. Turn off the engine and put the gearshift in the "neutral" position. Remove the key from the ignition.
Move the attachment lever to the "disengaged" position. Lower the deck to the lowest level with the deck height lever.
Slide the mower deck under the tractor from the right side of the tractor. Attach the mower deck side suspension arms. Secure the arms by pushing the retaining pins in with your fingers.
Attach the rear lift links. Install the retaining springs and pins with your fingers. Attach the cable spring to the idler arm. Slide the cable housing guide into the bracket. Slide the collar over the cable. Install the retaining pin with your fingers.
Install the drive belt on the drive pulley with your fingers. Push the drive belt inside the belt keeper bracket with your fingers.
