The flywheel on your Tecumseh engine rotates the engine's crankshaft. The flywheel is held on to the crankshaft via a flywheel nut and flywheel key on the top of the crankshaft. Overtime, the flywheel key will wear out, or if you suddenly stop the crankshaft of the Tecumseh engine -- such as when a mower blade hits a tree stump -- the flywheel key can shear off. Replacing the flywheel key involves removing the flywheel with an assistant and a few special tools.
Things You'll Need
Sockets and ratchet
Flywheel holder
3-arm gear puller
Flywheel key
Remove the flywheel shroud from the top of the Tecumseh engine. Use the proper-sized sockets to remove the bolts around the outer edge of the shroud. Pull the shroud off to expose the flywheel.
Place the flywheel holder on the outer fins of the flywheel. Have your assistant fit the correct-sized socket on the flywheel nut in the center of the flywheel. Hold the flywheel holder firmly as your assistant unscrews the flywheel nut.
Fit the 3-arm gear puller under the outer, bottom side of the flywheel. Tighten the center bolt of the gear puller down with a proper-sized socket. Eventually, the downward pressure will pop the flywheel up and free.
Pull the flywheel off the crankshaft.
Pull the old flywheel key out of the crankshaft. Place the new one back in the crankshaft groove.
Place the flywheel back on the crankshaft so the groove in the flywheel hole lines up with the flywheel key.
Place the flywheel holder on the fins of the flywheel and hold it firmly. Have your assistant tighten the flywheel nut with a proper-sized socket.
Replace the flywheel shroud and tighten all its bolts back into place.
