How to Grow a Frangipani Tree. Frangipani trees, or plumeria trees, have bright green foliage with colorful flowers that bloom when warm temperatures abound. Frangipani flowers come in such colors as lavender, red, pink, yellow and white. These trees may be pruned to keep them small shrubs or, when not pruned, may reach heights of up to 40 feet....
Frangipani trees, or plumeria trees, have bright green foliage with colorful flowers that bloom when warm temperatures abound. Frangipani flowers come in such colors as lavender, red, pink, yellow and white. These trees may be pruned to keep them small shrubs or, when not pruned, may reach heights of up to 40 feet. Frangipani trees are easy to grow in your own garden, as long as the proper heat, light, moisture and fertilization are provided.

Choose a growing location for your plant that is well-ventilated and has plenty of sunlight.
Plant the young frangipani in a container or an area of your garden prepared with a high-quality commercial potting mix. The mix should be 40 percent potting mix combined with 60 percent pea gravel or pearlite to maintain good soil drainage.
Water the soil with a bactericide or fungicide mix to prevent growth of harmful bacteria and fungi that may cause disease in young plants.
Remove the young frangipani plant from its nursery pot and place it into your prepared container or garden spot.
Water plants daily to maintain soil that is moist but not soggy or damp.
Fertilize plants regularly during warm temperatures by adding a slow-release fertilizer to the soil.
Prune the frangipani anytime during the year to help the tree maintain its shape or to keep it small. Prune the branches to 1/2 their natural length to produce dense foliage on the tree. Pruning is not necessary if you wish to grow a large frangipani tree.
Protect your frangipani tree from frost, as this can seriously damage the foliage and branches of your tree. If your tree grows in a container, bring it indoors or into a shed or garage to spend the winter. If the tree grows outdoors, cover it with a drop cloth or sheet to protect it from frost. Remember, your frangipani tree will not bloom after temperatures drop below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Tips & Warnings
Frangipani trees are tolerant of heat and wind, but if you live in harsh conditions, consider growing your frangipani in a container that can be brought into shelter when necessary.
Insecticidal soap works well to relieve your frangipani tree of any insects that infest the tree, such as scale insects on the leaves.
