Spiders are beneficial creatures that greatly reduce the pest population. Most spiders are harmless to humans, but they can become pests when they enter your yard. They like to make their homes in dark, quiet areas such as bushes, eaves and porches. Using diatomaceous earth is a safe way to eliminate spiders outside your home without harming humans, pets or plants. If you discover spiders outside your home, treat them immediately before an infestation occurs.
Things You'll Need
Diatomaceous earth
Water hose
Sprinkle food-grade diatomaceous earth around your yard to keep spiders from entering. Diatomaceous earth has razor-sharp edges that penetrate the insect's body, causing dehydration and death.
Dust some diatomaceous earth on your bushes and outside plants. It is nontoxic to humans and pets and will keep spiders and other insects away.
Wash off spider webs on and around your home with a water hose. Spiders are likely to move elsewhere once their webs have been disturbed.
Clear away any debris that would attract spiders to your yard. Move leaf litter and any rock and wood piles far away to keep spiders from coming into your yard.
Apply diatomaceous earth around entry points to your home. Sprinkle some lightly around windows and doorways to deter spiders from entering your home.
Tips & Warnings
You can purchase diatomaceous earth at your local home and garden center.
Diatomaceous earth is considered safe but should not be ingested. Wear a mask, goggles and gloves when applying the product.
