As with every modern engine, the oil in your Toro Wheel Horse lawn tractor should be changed regularly. You should also change the engine oil filter at the same time. Toro recommends changing the oil and the oil filter after the first 24 hours of operation and every 100 hours thereafter. This is a job you can do yourself with little trouble and easily save yourself the hassle and expense of a trip to a repair shop.
Things You'll Need
Drain hose (this came with the Toro tractor)
Bucket with a capacity greater than 2.5 liters
Cloth
Oil filter
Oil
Run the engine for a few minutes to warm the oil in the crankcase. This will help the oil flow from the engine more easily. Once the engine has warmed up then shut off the engine.
Remove the protective cap from the end of the oil drain valve. This valve is located at the very bottom of the side of the engine, almost directly below the oil dipstick. Remove the oil dipstick from the top of the engine.
Insert one end of the oil drain hose into the oil drain port and the other into the bucket or used oil container. Push the oil drain valve in slightly, turn it counterclockwise and pull it outwards. Allow the oil to drain into the bucket until all the oil has drained from the engine.
Push the drain valve back in, rotate it clockwise and pull it back to lock it into place. Remove the oil drain hose and replace the cap on the oil drain valve.
Wipe around the old oil filter with the cloth to remove any loose dirt or grit. Remove it by rotating it counterclockwise and unscrewing it from the engine.
Fill the new oil filter with oil until the level reaches the bottom of the threads. Put a drop of oil on your finger and run it around the gasket to lubricate it. Screw the new oil filter into the position of the old oil filter. Screw the filter for 1/2 turn after the gasket initially makes contact with the engine.
Clean the area around the filling tube with the cloth and fill with the engine oil. Slowly pour in the oil until it reaches the level labeled F on the dipstick. Once the level is correct replace and secure the dipstick. The tractor will take 1.7 liters of oil.
Tips & Warnings
The oil you should use varies by temperature and location. Consult your owners manual for more information.
Check the oil level after a few hours of use to make sure nothing has leaked out.
Make sure the vehicle is parked on flat ground so it does not move while you are working on the engine.
The oil leaving the engine will be hot -- use care when you are draining it.
Do not over tighten the oil filter otherwise it may leak.
