As the name implies, peat pots are made of peat that is pressed into a mold and dried. The finished product looks similar to cardboard and is used to grow seeds. The advantage of using peat pots is they can be planted directly into the soil, where they decompose. Buying peat pots for large gardens can get expensive. Instead of purchasing them, you can make them at home.
Things You'll Need
Frozen juice container
Ruler
Marker
Utility knife
2 wooden dowels, each 1/2 inch in diameter and approximately 4 inches long
Drill with 1/8- and 1/2-inch drill bits
Screw
Screwdriver
Bowl
Peat moss
Water
Rinse out a frozen concentrated juice tube and its lid.
Set the tube on a flat table and measure up to the desired height of your peat pots using a ruler. The height of most peat pots is between 4 and 6 inches. Mark the location with a marker.
Cut around the tube at the marked location using a utility knife. Discard the upper portion of the tube.
Turn the tube upside down so that the open end faces downward. Insert a 1/2-inch drill bit into a drill and create a hole in the center of the tube bottom.
Remove the 1/2-inch drill bit and replace it with a 1/8-inch drill bit. Carefully drill a 1/2-inch-deep hole in the top center of one of the wooden dowels.
Center the lid of the tube on top of the dowel. Place a screw in the location of the dowel hole and insert it all the way through the lid using a screwdriver. When you are done, the lid should be securely attached to the dowel.
Fill a bowl with 1 lb. or more of peat moss and add water a little at a time until it is the consistency of thick mud. The mixture should not be watery.
Scoop up 1/4 to 1/2 cup of the mixture and insert it into the open end of the tube. Insert the lid into the top of the tube with the dowel facing upward. Press down on the lid to compact the peat.
Insert another dowel through the hole in the bottom of the tube to create a drainage hole in the peat.
Allow the peat to dry before turning the tube upside down to remove the peat pot. Repeat the process as often as desired to create additional peat pots.
