Evans Bali (Prunus 'Evans') is a small sour cherry tree that grows from 10 to 15 feet tall. Gardeners who live in regions with extremely cold winters can easily grow the Evans, as it is hardy to U.S. Department of Agriculture zone 3. Just like its taller cousins, Evans bears lovely white flowers and bright-red cherries. The best time to get your Evans Bali cherry tree into the ground is in the spring.
Things You'll Need
Shovel
Choose a location in the yard that receives full sun all day.
Dig a hole that is three times as wide and 1 inch shallower than the pot in which the Evan Bali cherry tree is growing. Use a pitchfork to scrape the sides of the hole to allow the roots to more easily penetrate.
Lay the pot on its side, end toward the planting hole. If it is a plastic pot, gently press the sides and the bottom to loosen any roots that may be attached to the pot. Otherwise, strike the pot on the sides and the bottom.
Slide the Evans Bali cherry tree from the pot and inspect the roots. If the root ball is tight, use a sharp knife to slice through the roots on adjacent sides of the root ball.
Place the root ball in the hole. Check to see that the crown --- where the roots join the trunk --- sits 1 inch above the soil when the tree is planted. Add or remove soil until the tree sits at the proper depth.
Fill the hole with soil in increments. Fill it one-fourth of the way with soil, then add water to the top of the hole. When it drains, fill it halfway and, again, fill the hole with water. Add more soil until the hole is filled three-fourths of the way, add more water, allow it to drain and fill the hole completely with soil. The water helps settle the soil, and removes any air pockets trapped in the soil.
Water the Evans Bali cherry tree until the water puddles at the base.
