Instead of going to the gardening center to purchase new pots for your container plants, retrieve your empty coffee can from the trash bin. Traditional round metal coffee cans make the ideal can for this project. Since they come in several sizes, make can planters from varying sizes, to add interest to a planter arrangement. Paint each can the same color, or mix it up and use different colors for different cans in the same arrangement.
Things You'll Need
Towel
Nail
Hammer
Spray paint
Wash and dry the empty coffee can.
Turn the can upside down and place on a solid surface.
Hold the point of a large nail at the center of the bottom of the can, and hit the nail with a hammer, to make a drain hole. Depending on the size of the can and the size of the hole, you may need to make several drain holes, evenly spaced along the bottom of the can. Consider the size of the drain hole of a similar sized pot, when deciding how much drainage to add.
Paint the exterior of the can, using spray paint suitable for painting on metal. Allow the paint to thoroughly dry. Do this outside, and cover your work surface with newspaper to catch any paint spray. If desired, give the can a second coat of paint, and allow to thoroughly dry.
Add moist potting soil to the container, and add your plant. Depending on what you are planting, you will typically maintain the plant's soil line when planting in new soil.
