A manual tree pruner is a long, extendable pole with a pruning shear assembly on the end. The assembly operates using a lever, sometimes combined with pulleys to increase the force you can exert, allowing you to prune larger branches. To use the tool, place the hook-shaped blade onto a branch, then pull the long rope that operates the lever and close the blades. Through normal wear and tear, the rope on a pole pruner will eventually need replacing. This procedure takes just minutes to accomplish.
Things You'll Need
Replacement pole pruner rope
Two-Pulley Pruner
Thread the end of the new pruner rope farthest from the handle through the outward-facing opening in the upper pulley.
Pull the rope down, and thread the end of the rope through the inner side of the lower pulley.
Pull the rope up to the upper pulley, and tie its end to either the lower bolt or the loop on the end of the pulley.
Pull the rope carefully to operate the cutting blade of the pruners. Verify that the rope runs along the pulleys properly, and that the pulleys move freely and easily.
One-Pulley Pruner
Thread the end of the new pruner rope through the outward-facing opening in the pulley attached to the pruning blade.
Pull the rope down. Thread the end of the rope through the rope guide on the pole, below the pruning assembly.
Tie a knot in the end of the rope to prevent it from coming out of the rope guide.
Pull the rope to operate the cutting blade of the pruner. Check that the rope runs along the pulley properly and the pulley moves freely.
No-Pulley Pruner
Thread the end of the rope up through the rope guide on the pole below the pruning assembly.
Pull the end of the rope up to the hole in the end of the lever on the pruning blade. Thread the rope through the hole. Tie a knot to prevent the rope from coming loose.
Pull the rope to test the cutting blade of the pruner and to make sure the rope runs freely through the rope guide.
