MTD is one of the largest manufacturers of lawn mowers and gardening equipment. Depending on frequency of use, drive belts may need to be replaced bi-annually. Poor cutting and slow speed can be signs that the drive belt is weakening, and should be replaced. Failure to maintain your mower parts in good health may eventually leave your mower inoperable.
Things You'll Need
Replacement drive belt
Wrench
Purchase a replacement belt that is identical to the one currently in the mower. Each mower has belts designed with particular pitches and dimensions; specific belts are designed for each type of mower.
Park the mower on a flat surface. Turn off the motor and allow it to cool down. Remove the spark plug wire from the motor.
Lower the deck control lever to the lowest possible setting. Use a wrench to remove the bolts located next to the engine pulley.
Unhook the drive belt attached to the engine pulley. The deck hanger links that secured the belt should be removed.
Use the deck control lever to raise the deck to the disengage position. Slide the deck out and remove from mower.
Remove the drive belt from the deck, making note of the way it was secured to the pulley. The replacement must be put in the same position as the removed belt. Put the new belt in place, then wrap the belt with the pulleys in the same fashion as the previous belt had been fastened.
Slide the deck back underneath the motor. Return the deck control lever to the lowest setting. Secure the hanger links back in place. Reattach the hex bolts to the mower. Raise the deck control lever to the cutting setting.
