The golden chain tree is prized as an ornamental because of its striking display of yellow flowers. Despite its reputation for being tough to cultivate, the golden chain tree has been known to thrive in the right conditions. It needs full sun in cool areas and partial sun in warmer zones, and its soil must be nutritious, well-drained and slightly alkaline. Under these conditions and with the right care, golden chain trees planted from seed will thrive and flower abundantly for many years to come. For the best results, plant your seed in the landscape in fall, leave it to weather the winter and wait for the seedling in spring.
Things You'll Need
Shovel
File
Sandpaper
Water
Bowl
Rake
Hose
File the seed coat away from the golden chain tree seed carefully with a file or piece of sand paper. Use firm, single strokes until you just reveal the lighter seed under the seed coat in a small spot on the seed.
Pour boiling water over the seed and allow it to soak for 5 minutes.
Loosen and turn the soil on the planting site with a shovel in a circle that is roughly 2 feet in diameter and 8 inches deep. Remove any plants and roots, rocks or other debris that you encounter as you dig. Rake the soil smooth when you are done.
Plant the seed 1/4 inch deep.
Place a slow-running hose near the seed and water the soil until the planting area is moist to a depth of 8 inches.
Cover the planting area with a 2- to 3-inch layer of organic mulch. Scoop away the mulch directly over the seed.
Tips & Warnings
The golden chain tree grows best in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 5 through 7.
