Weeds seem to pop up out of nowhere. The stray pieces of grass can take over plants and flowers you want to keep as well as entire lawns and gardens. There are a variety of commercial weed killers available at hardware, garden and home improvement centers, but you can also make a homemade weed killer using bleach or vinegar and a dilution of water. Homemade weed killers can be effective and safer than commercial solutions and are inexpensive to produce in the quantities that you need.
Things You'll Need
Bucket
Dishwashing liquid
Lemon juice concentrate
White or cider vinegar
Cold water
Long-handled spoon
Latex gloves
Funnel
16 oz. spray bottle
Plastic wrap
Chlorine bleach
Vinegar and Water
Mix 1/2 cup dishwashing soap, 4 oz. lemon juice concentrate, 1 qt.white or cider vinegar and 1 cup cold water in a bucket. Stir the mixture with a long-handled spoon. Wear latex gloves to protect your hands.
Use a funnel to guide the vinegar and water mixture into a 16 oz. spray bottle. Cover any leftover mixture in the bucket with a piece of plastic wrap and use the mixture within 24 hours. The mixture starts to lose its strength after one day.
Spray the vinegar and water mixture directly on the weeds during the heat of the day. The heat accelerates the vinegar, lemon and water mixture and its ability to kill weeds.
