Troy-Bilt is a line of outdoor power equipment designed for both the homeowner and professional landscaper. Tillers are a popular Troy-Bilt product used to prepare gardens and landscaping beds in preparation for planting. Routine maintenance checks should be performed before starting the tiller engine each time. Checking the oil is necessary to determine if the proper amount of oil is present so the engine will be properly lubricated during use.
Things You'll Need
SAE 30 motor oil
Rag
Position the Troy-Bilt tiller on a flat surface to obtain an accurate reading of the fill tube or dipstick. Move the depth regulator lever to the second notch so the tiller engine is level.
Locate the dipstick or oil filler tube on the engine. Look to the side of the engine to locate the fill tube in most cases.
Pull the dipstick from the oil fill tube and wipe it clean with a rag. Insert the dipstick back into the tube completely and remove it again. Observe the point to which the oil comes on the dipstick in relation to the "Full" or "Add" marks. Add SAE 30 weight oil if necessary to bring the oil level up to the full marker. Place the dipstick back in the fill tube.
Remove the cap from the oil fill tube on Troy-Bilt tiller models without dipsticks. Look into the fill tube to determine the oil level. Fill the tube to the top with oil, if necessary, and place the cap securely back on the fill tube.
Tips & Warnings
Failing to properly maintain a sufficient amount of oil in a Troy-Bilt tiller engine can result in damage to the internal parts of the engine and possibly result in the engine seizing or locking up.
