Interlocking stones are used for a variety of purposes in the landscape, including creating walkways, patios and retaining walls. Over time sand, soil and weed seeds can work their way down into the grooves between the stones and start to grow. This not only creates an unattractive appearance, but can cause the stones to separate as the weed roots grow. Eliminating the weeds from between the interlocking stones can be accomplished using chemical herbicides.
Things You'll Need
Plastic tarps
Garden sprayer
Herbicide with glyphosate
Stove (optional)
Lay plastic tarps over all desirable grass and plants located near the interlocking pavers. This is to prevent the desirable grass and plants from being damaged during the weed treatment.
Open a garden sprayer and add a post-emergent herbicide that contains glyphosate as the main ingredient. Add the amount of herbicide instructed by the bottle and dilute it with water if instructed to do to.
Close the sprayer and shake it gently for three to five seconds to mix the solution.
Spray the weeds with the herbicide solution until it drips off of the leaves. Then spray the weeds growing in the cracks between the interlocking pavers.
Remove the plastic tarps and dispose of them in the trash. Wait at least one week, or the amount of time instructed on the herbicide bottle. Re-examine the weeds to see if they are dead and reapply the herbicide if any green is still seen.
Pull up the dead weeds from between the interlocking stones and place them in the trash.
Tips & Warnings
A natural way to kill weeds is to pour boiling water directly onto them. However, if the water does not reach the roots then the weed will grow back.
