Angel trumpet plants, members of the brugmansia family, are known for their large, fragrant, trumpet-shaped flowers. In fact, their fragrance has been described as "intoxicating." Interestingly, this species of garden plant falls under the category of poisonous plants. Still, this plant which is really a flowering shrub that can be pruned into a small tree, is growing in popularity in the southern United States. Part of what makes angel trumpet so popular is the ease in which it can be propagated and grown. Not only is it easily grown from seed, but it can also be rooted from cuttings as well.
Things You'll Need
Garden shears
Rubber gloves
Potting soil
Pot with drainage holes
Pencil
Put on the rubber gloves.
Cut off a limb from the main stalk of your angel trumpet plant using the garden shears.
Remove all of the leaves from the cutting except for the top one or two layers.
Fill the pot with potting soil until it is about an inch from the rim of the pot.
Dig out a deep hole for the cutting using the pencil, but be sure to leave some soil at the bottom of the pot.
Take the cutting, right side up, and stick it into the hole.
Water your cutting until the soil is compacted around it. Do not water again until the soil is dry to the touch, as this can cause the cutting to rot.
Tips & Warnings
To speed up the rooting process, place your cuttings on top of the refrigerator where it is a little warmer.
Remember that this plant is poisonous. If you have pets or children, it is not recommended to grow this plant.
The poison is mostly concentrated in the seed head, which is located deep inside the flower, but many experts who have done studies on this species say that all parts are poisonous, and that care should be taken when handling it.
