Compost bins, also known as the environmentally friendly trash-can, can be built out of many different materials. Using your old wooden pallets is an effective foundation for a compost bin, as they're made of wood, sturdy, and already have aeration built in. A compost bin allows you to naturally speed up the decomposing of food and earth friendly materials with the help of soil, salt and live bacteria. The building process should take around 20 minutes to set up.
Things You'll Need
4 wooden pallets
Shovel
Roll of twine (rope)
Shovel out a 3 x 3 foot area three inches deep in the ground. This is the area where you are going to place the pallets. Digging a few inches into the ground ensures a solid foundation and prevents wiggling.
Set the wooden pallets on their side in the 3x3 area, with the main boards facing up and down. Arrange them in a square/cube formation so that you would be able to fill it up like a bin.
Take three pieces of twine, the length of the outside of the new square you just made and tie them to hold the boards together. One at the top, one in the middle, and one on the bottom. This twine will act as the glue that holds the foundation and wooden pallets together.
Place the soil and compost materials in the bin you've just built. The natural holes in the wooden pallets allow the pile to breath and remembering to mix the pile every two days will ensure an effective compost pile.
