Homegrown vegetables provide much-needed fresh nutrition in our lives, but keeping plants healthy is a constant struggle. Conditions such as warm temperatures, wet climates and weeds easily lead to fungus growth on outdoor plants. Cucumbers are susceptible to a number of fungal diseases, including anthracnose and powdery mildew; these fungi cause plant discoloration and death. Immediate treatment is necessary to control fungus.
Things You'll Need
Fungicide
Water
Sprayer
Inspect your plants weekly after July or after a heavy rain season to check for mold. Hot temperatures and wet conditions contribute to fungus growth.
Dilute your chosen fungicide with water following specific product instructions. Different fungi are more susceptible to different fungicides, but products containing benomyl and chlorothalonil treat multiple types of fungus, according to North Dakota State University Extension Service. Follow specific product instructions for dilution rates.
Spray the fungicide on the tops and bottoms of all infected leaves, as well as leaves next to the infected ones. Some fungicides come in sprayers; for others, apply with an air-powered pump sprayer for best leaf coverage. Spraying down all the leaves and plants in the area to prevent the spread is another option.
Repeat fungicide application every seven days during the growing season---even after signs of infection are gone---to ensure that the fungus will not return.
Tips & Warnings
Fungus is often difficult or impossible to treat once settled on a cucumber plant. Practice crop rotation and plant only healthy plants and seeds for best prevention methods.
Stronger fungicides are available only to professional and commercial growers. Consult a local professional or extension service for further help.
Apply fungicides by following the specific product instructions, and never near animals or children. These chemicals are extremely toxic.
