Grass, weeds and plants grow where they will, regardless of the preference of the homeowner or gardener who cares for the land. As a result, those who take careful care of their gardens and lawns require a variety of tools to keep the plants looking their best. String trimmers cut down long grass and weeds near buildings, fences or borders, but over time the nylon string wears down and must be replaced. Stihl's F545 (also called FS 45) uses a double head trimmer.
Things You'll Need
Replacement line
Scissors
Deactivate the trimmer and ensure that is has had appropriate time to cool after use before performing any maintenance. The cutting head must be completely cool to safely add string to the trimmer.
Lay the trimmer down so that the cutting head is facing up. Rotate the cap counterclockwise until it is loosened and you can lift it up and out of the way.
Pull the spool away from the mowing head. Remove any old line from the spool.
Cut two 6-foot pieces of .080 inch diameter replacement line. Rotate the top and bottom pieces of the spool until the two arrows line up with each other; the arrows will be pointing directly towards each other.
Thread one end of each line into one of the holes in the spool. Push until the line will go in no further, then thread the other line into the other hole.
Turn the spool counterclockwise while you hold the base in place to wind the line. Continue to turn until only about 4 inches of line remain on each end. If necessary, cut one line to measure 4 inches if it turns out to be longer than the other.
Replace the spool into the trimmer and reattach the cap. The trimmer is now ready for use.
Tips & Warnings
Use only Stihl manufactured nylon line for Stihl products.
