Sugar baby watermelons are a favorite among watermelon lovers. These small watermelons are bursting with flavor and sweetness and usually weigh only 7 to 10 pounds. Growing quickly, sugar baby watermelons are ripe within 70 to 75 days, and can be grown in most areas with no problems. Growing these small watermelons takes a little preparation, but can be done by just about anyone. Simply starting the seeds indoors, then transplanting them out into your garden, will have you on your way to sweet, sun-ripened watermelons.

Start the seeds indoors by planting them in a planting tray filled with quality potting soil. Plant the seeds according to the seed package directions.
Water the seeds well, and place the planting tray in an area that will stay around 80 degrees during the day. A greenhouse is ideal; however, a sunny countertop will work as well.
Transplant the seedlings into an outdoor bed that has been aerated with a rake and has had all stones and debris removed from the soil. The seeds are ready to be transplanted into the outdoor bed when they have reached a height of 4 to 6 inches and have several leaves. Adding equal parts of loam and sand to the soil is beneficial, since watermelon plants enjoy rich, loamy soil.
Space the seedlings 2 to 3 feet apart in rows that are 5 to 7 feet apart. The watermelons will form vines, and will need plenty of room to grow.
Adding mulch around the watermelon plants will help retain moisture and heat close to the roots of the plants, thus helping them to thrive and produce healthy fruit.
Harvest the watermelons in 30 to 35 days, or when the melons are heavy and rich in color.
Tips & Warnings
Covering your seeding trays with plastic wrap will help create a greenhouse-like environment for your seeds.
Adding compost to your outdoor planting area and covering it with black plastic a few weeks before adding the seedlings will help make the planting soil nutrient rich for your watermelon plants.
