Trees in the hawthorn family make excellent ornamentals in the home landscape, sporting white flowers in the spring and red or orange fruit that lasts through the winter. Most hawthorn trees come with a foul smell and thorns, and therefore may not be the best choice where children and animals commonly play, but some thornless varieties are available. Hawthorn trees grow up to 30 feet tall and generally need little care to thrive.
Things You'll Need
Pesticide or insecticidal soap
Lopping or pruning shears
Control pests such as aphids and mites with a pesticide or insecticidal soap. If you see spots or holes in the leaves, this is a sign of pests. Take a sample to your local nursery or county extension office for diagnosis and treatment. Read and adhere to the labels on any product used.
Clear away mulch and debris within 6 inches of the trunk. This practice will help prevent disease, mold and rot.
Control diseases such as hawthorn cedar rust if they occur. Diseases often turn the leaves red or brown, beginning at the edges. You may also notice signs of rot on the branches. Often, the recommended course of treatment is pruning the afflicted limbs to control spread.
Prune hawthorn trees for shape and to control growth during the dormant season, usually from late fall until early spring. Hawthorn trees don’t need pruning, but if you choose to do so, pruning during the dormant season helps control the spread of any disease that may be present.
Water hawthorn trees from spring until fall when rain has been scarce for two or three weeks. Hawthorns prefer moist soil but can tolerate dry conditions. However, if you’re experiencing a dry period, water it with 1 to 2 inches of water.
