The branch of the palm tree is often used in poorer countries to form roofs for mud or clay houses, for drying racks or for baskets. In the United States one of the most commonly seen uses is near the Easter holidays, for depicting Palm Sunday. When making items out of palm branches, it is best for it not to be dry so that it is still pliable and able to be shaped. Once in its correct shape, however, it should be dried so that it will remain in that shape.
Things You'll Need
Palm branches
Blanket or cloth
Oven
Baking pan
Paper towels
Microwave
Naturally
Lay a blanket or a large cloth on the ground in a warm sunny spot.
Put a large single palm branch or item made out of palm branches on the cloth.
Allow the sun to naturally dry the palm branch. This could take several days or even weeks, depending on how much sun the branches get each day.
In an Oven
Lay a small palm branch on a baking sheet.
Turn the oven on very low and place the baking sheet with the palm branch inside.
Allow the branch to dry for several hours in the oven. Check it often to make sure it is not getting too dry and burning.
In the Microwave
Place a paper towel in the microwave and put the palm branch on top.
Lay another paper towel on top of the branch.
Turn the microwave on for several minutes to dry the branch. Check it often to know when it is completely dry.
Tips & Warnings
The oven and microwave will only work if you have palm branches small enough to fit inside.
If you have put a roof on a house and wish it to dry, it will do so naturally on top of the building. There is no need to dry it before putting it on the building.
