Termites are social insects that live in large colonies. Each colony can contain hundreds to millions of termites. Over half of the colony are workers that are responsible for termite damage. Termites cause damage to any cellulose object such as paper, wood, carpet and cardboard. It takes a colony years to completely destroy a structure. Termites often infect oak trees to help break down a damaged or dying tree. If the tree is close to a structure, it may be necessary to treat the tree for termites so they do not spread.

Liquid termite spray
Termite baits
Inspect the oak tree that you suspect is infested with termites. Look for tunnels on the outside of the tree that are made from mud. Examine the wood for signs of damage, such as deep fissures. Tap on the tree to see if it sounds hollow. It may be necessary to have a professional identify termite infestation if you are unsure.
Purchase a liquid termite spray from your local home improvement store. Choose a product that contains Fipronil.
Spray a 3-foot radius on the ground surrounding the tree. If there are any other trees in this radius, you will want to treat them for prevention.
Apply the spray 2 feet up the trunk of the oak tree. Saturate the bark with the spray until the outside base of the tree is soaking.
Place termite baits on the ground every 3 feet surrounding the base of the tree. This will attract any termites that have survived the termite spray. They will carry the poison back to the queen and kill off the remaining colony.
Re-treat the oak tree as soon as you see any new signs of activity.
