The variegated peace lily, or Spathiphyllum clevelandii, is a popular houseplant that's notable for its lush, vibrant foliage and bright, white blooms. A tropical plant, the variegated peace lily was introduced to the rest of the world from the rain forests of South America. The peace lily plant is easy to care for, and can live happily indoors under artificial fluorescent lights for a number of years with appropriate care.
Things You'll Need
Spray bottle
Sponge
20-20-20 house plant fertilizer
Isopropyl alcohol
Soapy water
Place the plant in a sheltered area within 5 to 8 feet of a window. If the foliage begins to turn yellow, relocate the plant to an area with more shade.
Water the variegated peace lily thoroughly with room temperature water. Allow the soil to dry before watering again. When the plant's leaves begin to droop slightly, it's time to add more water.
Mist the leaves three times a week with cool water. As a tropical plant, the variegated peace lily thrives in moist, humid conditions. Wipe the foliage with a damp sponge to remove any dust or debris.
Fertilize the variegated peace lily once a month during the growing season. Add a standard 20-20-20 house plant fertilizer to moist soil. Use the fertilizer at one-fourth of the recommended dilution rate. The root hairs of the peace lily are fragile and can be easily damaged by direct contact with harsh chemicals.
Inspect the leaves regularly for any signs of pest infestation. Treat any damaged leaves by wiping gently with isopropyl alcohol or soapy water.
Tips & Warnings
Keep pets and children away from the variegated peace lily; if ingested its leaves are toxic.
