Deer are generally docile animals that stay to themselves. They become a nuisance when snacking on your garden and flower plants turns into devouring. There are many methods for keeping deer out of a garden, including chemical repellents and fences. Natural deer repellent methods are more humane to the deer, more friendly to the environment and just as effective as commercial methods. Additionally, natural methods to controlling deer are much less expensive, saving your money and your garden.
Things You'll Need
6 bars Irish Spring soap
Paring knife
12 garden stakes
Aluminum foil
Scissors
Twine
Plastic container
Human urine
Cut six bars of Irish Spring soap in half, lengthwise. Cutting the soap in half makes it go further and makes the scent stronger.
Insert a garden stake into the end of each soap bar half so the soap is stuck on the end of the stake lengthwise. Push the stake into the bar of soap at least 2 inches so the soap is securely affixed to the garden stake.
Push the soap stakes into the ground around the perimeter of your garden. Place each of the 12 soap stakes at even intervals. Deer are repelled by pungent or strong odors, and strong-smelling soap will help turn the deer away.
Cut wide strips of aluminum foil with a pair of scissors. Use strips ranging from 3 to 5 inches long. Twist the end of the aluminum foil strip around the end of a piece of string.
Suspend the aluminum foil strips, at varying heights around your garden, by tying them to trees, bushes or shepherd's hooks. Tie the aluminum foil so it hangs from the string and can move around in the wind. Shiny, moving objects startle the deer, causing them to turn away.
Collect urine in a plastic container, from yourself or a family member's donation. Sprinkle the urine around the perimeter of the garden. The urine of predators is a natural repellent for deer.
Tips & Warnings
Place human hair clippings around your garden to repel deer naturally.
