Dog may be man's best friend, but the fleas that live on dogs and other household pets may be a pet owner's worst enemy. When a flea infestation happens, your home can become overrun with the little parasites as they feed off your pets and even you and your family. As frustrating as a flea infestation may be, you can make your own flea treatments at home for little money and little effort.
Things You'll Need
Vacuum
Vacuum attachments
Zip-top bag
Steam cleaner
Washing machine
Dryer
Shallow baking dish

Cleaning
Use your vacuum and its attachments to clean your carpets, hardwood flooring and furniture daily. Fleas find their ways into small crevices, so be sure to use your vacuum's crevice tool along baseboards, under couch cushions and along the seams of your hardwood flooring. Empty the contents of the vacuum into a zip-top bag, and seal the bag and discard of it outside.
Use a steam cleaner to clean your carpets, rugs and furniture weekly. If you do not have a steam cleaner in your home, you can rent one from your local grocery store or home improvement store. However, renting a machine can become pricey, so you may want to consider investing in a home model. After steaming, pour the contents of the water receptacle down the toilet to drown the fleas and their eggs.
Wash all bedding for both you and your pets weekly in the washing machine. Dry the bedding in the dryer to allow the heated air to help kill the fleas.
Water Traps
Fill a shallow baking dish with an inch of tap water. Stir in a tablespoon of liquid dish detergent. The liquid dish detergent helps break the surface tension of the water.
Place the baking dish in the center of a carpeted room. Position the light on a snake-neck lamp over the top of the baking dish. Turn the lamp on and turn off the rest of the lights in the room. Leave the baking dish in this manner overnight. The fleas are attracted by the heat of the lightbulb and jump to reach it. They then fall into the baking dish and drown.
Empty the contents of the baking dish into the toilet in the morning.
