Springtime is an excellent time to choose to kill poison ivy plants, when the leaves are shiny and new. To identify poison ivy, look for plants with three divided leaves that grow on alternating sides of a stem and one leaf at the top, in the center. Once you properly identify the plant, it is possible to effectively kill it without using harmful herbicides. Household products are safer to use than any toxic commercial product and the results are the same.
Things You'll Need
1/2 cup orange oil
1 gal white vinegar
1 tsp liquid soap
Mix together ? cup orange oil, 1 gal white vinegar, and 1 tsp liquid soap and put in a spray bottle.
Spray the mixture directly on the poison ivy plant, concentrating on the roots. You can also pour the mixture on the weeds. Refill the spray bottle as necessary until the entire poison ivy plant is saturated.
Check the plant after 24 hours. You may still see poison sprout again after one application; if this occurs, repeat this process a second time.
Tips & Warnings
Goats will eat poison ivy plants with no ill effects; so, if you have goats, it is safe to allow them to eat the plants.
Never burn poison ivy plants; inhaling the smoke can damage your lungs.
Always wear gloves, long sleeved shirt and pants when getting rid of poison ivy plants to avoid getting a rash from coming into contact with the plant's oils.
This mixture can also kill other vegetation so only spray the plants you want to kill.
