When the carburetor on your 10-horsepower Briggs & Stratton engine breaks or becomes gummed up with old gas, rust and debris, you will have to remove and replace the carburetor to get the engine running again. Engines are often thrown away when all they need is a new carburetor. Removing and replacing a carburetor can easily be done with a few tools in your own garage.
Things You'll Need
Socket set and ratchet
Pliers
Locate the gas tank on the 10-horsepower Briggs & Stratton engine.
Follow the fuel hose clamped to the base of the gas tank to the side of the carburetor.
Squeeze the spring-loaded clamp holding the fuel line onto the side of the carburetor with the pliers. Slide the clamp down the hose several inches and pull the hose off the side of the carburetor.
Unhook the throttle linkage rod from the eyelet on top of the carburetor.
Unscrew the four bolts holding the carburetor onto the engine block with sockets of the proper size---three-eighths of an inch for most 10-horsepower Briggs & Stratton engines.
Pull the carburetor off the side of the engine.
