How to Make Lilac Sachets

When your lilac bushes are in full bloom, capture and preserve their appealing fragrance by making lilac sachets for your linen or clothes closets. These are typically small, decorative fabric pouches, filled with dried lilac blossoms. Make the pouch from a breathable fabric, with a tight weave to avoid pieces of the dried flowers from escaping the pouch. Harvest the lilacs for the project before they have begun to wilt, when the flowers are at their prime. Use the sachets yourself, or make them as gifts.

Cut bunches of lilac blossoms from the plant, leaving enough stem to secure the bunch-like bouquet.

Secure the bottom of the bunch, around the stems, with a rubber band and hang, upside down, in a dark, warm, well-ventilated area for about three weeks, or until the cuttings are completely dry. Do not dry flowers in a damp or moist environment.

Prepare a small fabric pouch. This might be an old sock, nylon sock or a fabric pouch you sew together by folding a fabric rectangle in half and sewing up the sides. Turn right side out, so the visible seam stitching is on the inside and the right side of the fabric is on the outside.

Decorate the outside of the pouch if desired, by affixing embellishments like buttons or silk flowers with a hot glue gun.

Remove the dried lilac blossoms from the stems and fill the pouch completely with the dried flowers.

Secure the end of the pouch shut, by sewing or tying with a ribbon.
