Picking pecans is not difficult, but it can leave you with a sore back. When the pecans are ripe they fall to the ground, and they must be picked up right away so that they don't rot or get eaten by squirrels and other animals. Some people add this job to their children's chore list, but many are not lucky enough to have a small task force at hand. Use simple materials that you can purchase for just a few dollars and you can craft a pecan picker that will save you from bending over again and again during pecan season.
Things You'll Need
Metal slinky toy
Florist wire
Clamp
Bamboo pole
Drill
Thread an 8-inch length of florist wire through the Slinky. Cross over the two ends of the wire and pull the wire taut. This will cause the Slinky to curve up. Stop pulling when the Slinky is in a half-circle, Twist the ends of the wire to hold the Slinky in place.
Place a 4-foot bamboo pole into a clamp, allowing 3 inches to stick out of one end. Drill a 1/2-inch hole in the end of the bamboo pole, 1 inch from the end of the pole.
Thread the ends of the florist wire through the hole in the bamboo pole. Thread one wire through the right side of the pole and out the left, while you thread the other wire through the left side of the pole and out the right.
Pull the wires tightly and wrap them toward the front of the pole. Cross the wires in front and wrap them back toward the holes. Thread the wires through the holes again in the same manner.
Wrap the wires toward the back of the pole and cross the wires. Continue wrapping the wires around the bamboo pole until they just meet. Twist the ends of the wires together to hold them secure.
