A beautiful bouquet of blooming flowers can brighten up any room, but when you cut the flowers before they bloom, you may have trouble getting them to open. Rather than sit and wait for days for the flowers to bloom--which they may never do--you can take a few steps to nudge them in the direction of opening up, while also extending their lives.

Clean the flower vase thoroughly. It's important to remove any bacteria, which can hinder the flowers' ability to take up water.
Cut the stems at an angle. Use very sharp scissors. When you cut the stem at an angle, it keeps the stem open for water, whereas a straight-across cut could cut water off. The more water your flower can receive, the more quickly it will bloom.
Remove leaves from the bottom of the flower. The part of the stem that will be covered by water should be completely leaf-free. Leaves can steal water from the buds, and you want the buds to get as much water as possible.
Fill the vase with warm water. It should not be hot--just lukewarm. This temperature will encourage the blooms to open.
Replace the water every 24 house. If blooms are still not open, use warm water again. If they've opened, switch to cold water to preserve the life of the flowers.
