Termites and carpenter ants can be terrible pests to your home and garden. These insects both like to nest in wood, especially when the wood is moist and already decaying. Your first and best line of defense from these troublemakers is to ensure that your home stays weatherproof and the wood in your home is not overly exposed to moisture.
Things You'll Need
Residual pesticide of your choice
Pesticide spray applicator
Bait pesticide of your choice
Inspect the perimeter of your home. Look for any areas where termites or ants may enter your home. Be aware of cracks in stucco and rotting wood. These can be areas of very high traffic. They will be the areas that you focus your efforts on.
Fill your spray applicator with the pesticide. Follow the manufacturer's directions to avoid unsafe contact with the pesticide.
Walk the perimeter of your house, spraying the pesticide on the ground and foundation of the house. You want the pesticide to cover one foot of the foundation of the house and one to two feet of the ground around the house. You can spray extra in your trouble areas to ensure a good barrier.
Place bait pesticide around the perimeter of the house. The bait attracts the pests to feed and carry the poison back to the nest to eliminate the rest of the colony.
Repeat this process every three to four months to keep termites and ants away.
Tips & Warnings
Pesticides can be dangerous and should be used only as directed by the manufacturer.
