Squirrels, cats and even children can cause problems when they climb up your trees, which may give them access to your home if it's close enough. To prevent this from happening, you need to take some preventive action. By blocking the access to the tree and making it otherwise unappealing, you can discourage these animals from climbing. Unfortunately, doing so can be a bit of an eyesore, so you need to determine whether it's right for you.
Things You'll Need
Aluminum flashing
Remove branches that are close to the ground. This prevents some animals from jumping from the ground up into your tree.
Trim any areas close to your house. You want at least 10 feet of space between your home and the tree, so animals cannot jump from the tree to your house and vice versa.
Wrap a piece of aluminum flashing around the tree trunk. It should be about 24 inches wide. Animals are unable to sink their nails into this material, preventing tree climbing.
