Sedirea Japonica, also known as a Nagoran orchid, is a Japanese orchid cultivar (from "cultivated variety") that boasts deep green leaves and creamy-white flowers with attractive purple blotches. Sedirea Japonica's beautiful flowers are highly fragrant, giving off a pleasant, lemon-citrus scent. In the United States, Sedirea Japonica orchids are primarily grown indoors, where it is easier to simulate the growing conditions of its native Japanese climate. With proper care, your Sedirea Japonica can be grown as a houseplant for many years.
Things You'll Need
Sedirea Japonica orchid
Tray
Pebbles
Cool-mist humidifier
Watering can
Orchid fertilizer or 20-10-20 fertilizer
Position your Sedirea Japonica orchid four to eight feet from an east- or south-facing window where it can receive four to six hours of bright, indirect sunlight per day. Make sure that the spot that you choose for your orchid is positioned at least six feet away from air conditioners, heaters or drafts that could cause the growing medium for your Sedirea Japonica orchid to dry out prematurely.
Keep the temperature of the room where your Sedirea Japonica orchid is kept between 65 and 80 degrees F. during the daytime. Lower the temperature by 10 to 20 degrees at night to mimic the naturally cooler night-time temperatures that your orchid would experience outdoors; lower night-time temperatures are essential for healthy flower production.
Raise the humidity level in your home to between 50 and 70 percent humidity to make it hospitable for your Sedirea Japonica orchid. Fill a shallow tray with pebbles and cover the pebbles with water. Place the orchid on top of the tray, making sure that the water does not touch the bottom of the planting container. Another way to provide healthy humidity for your orchid is to place a cool-mist humidifier in the room where the orchid is kept.
Check the moisture of the growing medium daily to determine when to water the orchid. Water the orchid when the surface of the growing medium feels dry to the touch. Use spring water or collected rainwater when watering your Sedirea Japonica orchid for best results.
Fertilize the orchid every other watering during the spring, summer and fall. Reduce the frequency of fertilization to once a month, or once every third watering, during the winter months. Use a specially formulated orchid fertilizer or a urea-free 20-10-20 fertilizer to feed your orchid. Follow label instructions for specific fertilizer-application directions.
