The name Joe Pye traces back to a legendary Indian herbalist. However, historians have had a tough time documenting the life of the real Joe Pye. Some believe that he extensively used this plant as a medicine. The Joe Pye weed plant or Eupatorium is low-maintenance and grows to a height of 3 to 4 feet. Its pink and lavender blossoms are tightknit as is its foliage when it is completely mature. This perennial plant has thick leaves, and it's often used as a border in gardens.

Place your Joe Pye plant in a place where it will receive full sun most of the time and a little shade. This is essential for it to reach its complete blooming capacity. The soil has to be rich and well-fertilized.
Keep the plant moistened constantly. Dilute the fertilizer you are using by half the recommended quantity and add this to the plant on a weekly basis.
Run your palms up mature plants to get rid of critters that may be nibbling on the leaves. This can happen when plants go through an extended dry spell.
Prune the plant to reduce its height if desired just before it begins to flower. It blooms from the end of July to the beginning of September. You can just pinch the plants in order to reduce their height.
Cut back plants by approximately 6 inches toward the end of spring or the very beginning of summer if you want a shorter, bushy plant.
In the spring, cut plants down so that they are just 3 or 4 inches from the ground. They will shoot up from there.
