Growing a vegetable garden is a gratifying hobby because you eventually get to eat and enjoy the results of all your hard work. Nothing is more aggravating then discovering that insects are eating your vegetables. Insects not only destroy your chances of enjoying the vegetables you planted but, left unattended, they can kill your vegetable plants. Commercial insecticides are available, but you can make your own organic insecticide using simple supplies from home and the store. Use your homemade insecticide to kill insects on your plants and enjoy eating fresh vegetables from your garden.
Things You'll Need
Spray bottle
5 drops spearmint oil
8 drops orange essential oil
Mixing bowl
Spoon
Measuring spoon
Salt
Water
Drop five drops of spearmint oil and eight drops of orange essential oil into your spray bottle. Essential oils are sold at most health food stores.
Mix 1/2 tsp. salt with 1 qt. quart of water in a mixing bowl. Stir well to ensure the salt dissolves.
Pour the salt water into the spray bottle and shake to combine it with the essential oils. Store in a location away from heat or direct sunlight. Shake before each use.
Tips & Warnings
Spray your vegetables, liberally, with your homemade insecticide. Spray the stems, vegetables and the undersides of leaves.
Wash vegetables in soapy water and rinse with cool water to remove the residue of your homemade insecticide.
