Shrews are small creatures that resemble moles, except they are smaller than moles, and unlike moles, shrews live aboveground. Shrews can live in your yard or in your home. In the yard, simple pesticides containing castor oil can rid your lawn of shrews, but in the home, they are a bit more difficult to kill. There are several species of shrews that live in North America, but they can all be killed quickly and humanely with simple snap traps.
Things You'll Need
Chipmunk snap traps
Peanut butter
Oatmeal
Plastic bags
Set up the chipmunk snap traps as directed. Each chipmunk trap varies in setup, so follow the directions. The chipmunk traps are large enough to kill shrews. Mouse traps are a bit too small for killing shrews, so opt for a bit larger trap.
Mix 1 cup of peanut butter with 1 cup of dry oatmeal. Mix them until the consistency is even and extremely thick. You may need to add a bit more dry oatmeal, depending on the thickness of your peanut butter.
Place the oatmeal-peanut-butter mixture in dabs on the traps. You don't need a lot, just enough to attract the shrews.
Place the traps behind and under furniture, in the attic, and in the basement. You also should find a way to put the traps into the walls.
Leave the traps to sit for 24 hours. Check them daily to replace bait and remove dead shrews.
Place dead shrews into a plastic bag and double bag it. Throw the carcass into an outside trash can with a snug fitting lid. This will keep out other wild animals that eat shrews.
