Pill bugs, sometimes referred to as woodlice, are outdoor creatures that are drawn to moisture in damp, dark areas. Pill bugs generally enter your home through a damp basement or garage. They are not harmful, but their mere presence can be a hindrance. Boric acid is a salt form of Borate which is a mineral mined from the Earth. Both the gel and powder form of boric acid are helpful in killing pill bugs.
Things You'll Need
Dehumidifier
Boric acid powder
Boric acid gel
Remove any moisture from your home. Use a dehumidifier in your basement or garage area to help keep the area free from moisture. Boric acid powder absorbs moisture, so make sure the area is dry first.
Use the boric acid powder to prevent pill bugs from entering your garage or basement. Apply the powder around the walls and doors on the inside and outside. Also, place the powder along any cracks on the outside of the walls.
Dab boric acid gel around the bottom of your sink cabinets and around the pipes to and from the sink. The gel stays put when dabbed, so use it in areas where food is prepared. Avoid getting any of the boric acid into food or drinks.
Sprinkle boric acid behind your refrigerator. Use the powder for large areas. Any area in your home, such as the laundry room, that is cool and dark should be treated with boric acid to get rid of pill bugs.
Add to the boric acid every two weeks. Even though the boric acid remains effective for months, insects drag the particles of boric acid with them when they pass through it.
Tips & Warnings
Boric acid is non-toxic to humans and other animals, so apply it liberally.
Avoid breathing the dust from boric acid powder.
Do not put boric acid on flowers or landscaping.
