Well covers are necessary for safety but are not always the most attractive additions to your landscaping projects. Decorating them goes back centuries, where people believed that they were portals to other dimensions filled with spirits and other magical creatures. Whether it is a metal cover flat on the ground or built-up concrete, hiding it from view is not difficult. There are creative ways to make it blend into your landscaping.

Outdoor paint
Bushes or hedges
Large potted plants
Decorative garden fence

Step 1
Paint it the same color as the surrounding landscape using the appropriate paint for either outdoor metal or outdoor concrete. For example, if it is flat on the ground, paint it a grass green or if it is built-up concrete near a tree line, paint it a bark brown.
Step 2
Plant bushes or hedging around it. If the well system is still in use for your home's water supply, talk to a local professional about what type would be best because of the risk of roots getting into the lines.
Step 3
Hide a well cover with large potted plants if planting in the ground around it is not an option. For flat covers, place a decorative pot of the same dimensions on top of it to cover it up.
Step 4
Set plants around the cover and put in a decorative garden fence all the way around it. Pick a fence that is just tall enough to conceal the cover itself, not the plants, and it will look like a miniature garden.
Step 5
Lay decorative stone around it and place a yard decoration, such as a fountain, birdhouse or garden statue, on top of the cover itself to conceal it. Treat it like a pedestal or backdrop for a landscaping project.
Step 6
Build a wishing-well facade around it. Complete the look with a crank handle and bucket to add old-fashioned charm to your landscape.
Step 7
Erect an outdoor building to hide a well cover, like a backyard gazebo, with the cover dead center. Install an access panel for flat-to-the-ground covers and treat large built-up ones like a table in the middle.
